Online Dating Portal Launches

Article 05 Sept 2003

WWoBn Communications Group's Founder and CEO Brad Nietfeldt was featured in the UNO Gateway Newspaper in an article about DateOmaha.com.

By: Josh Bashara February 04, 2005

"For someone who goes by the name "Mr-Nasty" (a nickname given to him by his online gaming friends for his crude gaming abilities) online, Brad Nietfeldt is pretty polite and cordial. The 23-year-old entrepreneur sits in his company headquarters-a tiny but accommodating office space near "L" Street-and is explaining how he went from computer geek to local Web mogul."

Nietfeldt is the owner and operator of DateOmaha.com, a new Web-based service that calls itself "Omaha's intelligent dating resource." He owns several other Web sites, all of which fall under the jurisdiction of his parent company, WWoBn Communications Group.

Nietfeldt says that he acquired somewhat of an addiction to computers in high school, when he set up and ran his own bulletin board system, a now-archaic precursor to online communities like MySpace and Friendster. It didn't take Nietfeldt long to learn the ropes and get hired by an Internet service provider while he was still in high school.

After high school, Nietfeldt received his associates degree in computer networking from ITT Technical Institute, a bachelors degree from Bellevue, and is currently working on his master's at Bellevue University.

His DateOmaha.com Web site was just re-launched last month from its beta version, which has been running for about eight months. He got the idea from Omahasingles.com, but says he wanted an alternative. He wanted create something that targeted the college-age crowd and catered to that lifestyle.

Oddly enough, Nietfeldt isn't a user of online dating services himself. "Actually never," he says with a laugh. "It was just something I always wanted to build. I really just wanted to see if I could do it."

He was laid up in the hospital for a few weeks after he had surgery last year, so he started brainstorming some ideas. In only a week and a half, he had a rough version of the site designed and ready to rock.

But it was a learning experience for him, and he admits to having to work out a few kinks. Nonetheless, his initial beta version of the site attracted thousands of visitors and hundreds of members without any real advertising.

The new incarnation of DateOmaha.com includes a bunch of nifty features like instant messaging, a site-wide mail system, photo albums and something called a "hot list" that lets users see who's been checking them out.

Shifting his baseball hat a little, Nietfeldt eagerly mentions the "Match Finder" feature he designed; it's an intuitive notification system that pairs up users based on a variety of criteria including age, location, interests and more. Over the next few weeks, Nietfeldt hopes to add live video chat capabilities to the site, which would allow potential lovebirds to talk to each other via their Web cams.

The most intriguing aspect of DateOmaha.com right now is that it's doesn't cost a penny to use. In a bold marketing move, Nietfeldt is giving the site's services away for free, hoping instead that he will be able to draw revenue solely from advertisers instead.

So far the fruits of his labor are beginning to pay off. Nietfeldt has hooked up with several hip Omaha-area companies such as ultramusique.com in an attempt to widen his user base and get some cross-promotion going. Nietfeldt hopes that DateOmaha.com will not only serve as a dating and friendship service, but as an online portal for local happenings as well.

Despite all the site has to offer, though, Nietfeldt admits that some people still raise a hesitant eyebrow when it comes to meeting people from the Internet.

"It was dorky back in the day," he says, smirking. "I remember back in high school people making fun of you for that. I think it's more accepted now because more people do it. It's a little safer now, too."

DateOmaha.com offers a wide range of security options, including the ability to block users and display only certain information on your profile.

Above all else, though, it seems as if Nietfeldt is just having a good time. "The cool thing about it is that it's homegrown," he says, beaming. "It's something that I wrote and I'm really proud of that. It's not going to go away anytime soon."
